The story of an ABRSM Scholar

Every year we provide more than 70 scholarships for talented British and international musicians to study at the four Royal Schools of Music in the UK, in addition to our core donation to each of the Schools.

Chun-Yi at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

11-year-old Glaswegian Chun-Yi was awarded a place at the RCS’s Junior Conservatoire as an ABRSM Scholar in September 2016.

Her interest in music was sparked at an early age. When she was five she remembers being fascinated with the sound of her brother performing the violin and asked her parents if she could have lessons too.

She’s now been playing for just over five years and achieved her Grade 8 in the spring of 2016.

Her first music teacher encouraged and inspired her to take part in small concerts. Since then Chun-Yi has enjoyed playing in her school, Bearsden and Milngavie orchestras, as well as the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland. This summer she took part in the Play On summer school at the RCS, playing alongside Nicola Benedetti – an experience she described as “great fun”.

Chun-Yi said: “Playing the violin has brought me so much joy, especially meeting new friends in various orchestras. To motivate and challenge myself further, I have taken and done very well in ABRSM exams over the years and am currently preparing for my Diploma.

“I am so grateful to have been awarded the ABRSM scholarship and I am thoroughly enjoying my time with the Junior Conservatoire at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland!”

Jenn Adams, RCS Head of Junior Conservatoire, said: “We are thrilled and privileged to have Chun-Yi join the Junior RCS.

“Chun-Yi is a dedicated young musician of real potential who will now thrive under the direction of our expert music staff.

“Our cross-disciplinary approach to learning will enable her to develop her creativity and continue to grow and shine.”
